A Bangladeshi national, Al Amin (36), was killed in firing by India’s Border Security Force (BSF) along the Panchagarh border early Saturday (March 8). The incident occurred in the Rajganj area of India, near the Uttar Talma border in Panchagarh Sadar upazila. Al Amin, son of Suruj Ali, was a resident of Jinnatpara village in Haribhasa union of Panchagarh.
According to sources from the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and local residents, Al Amin had been missing for three days prior to the incident. On Friday night, he was part of a group of 15-20 cattle smugglers attempting to bring cows from India into Bangladesh. When the BSF intercepted the group, a scuffle broke out between the smugglers and the Indian border guards. The situation escalated, prompting the BSF to open fire, resulting in Al Amin’s death on the spot. His body was reportedly taken away by the BSF.
The BGB stated that while Al Amin was a Bangladeshi citizen, he frequently stayed inside Indian territory for smuggling purposes. He was allegedly involved in cattle smuggling in collaboration with both Bangladeshi and Indian smugglers. The fatal shooting occurred during a smuggling attempt in the Bhatpara area of India.
Following the incident, a flag meeting was held between the commanding officer of the 56 BGB Battalion, Lieutenant Colonel Sheikh Md. Badruddoza, and the commanding officer of the 46 BSF Battalion at border pillar 744/7-S. During the meeting, the BGB strongly protested the killing and demanded the return of Al Amin’s body.
The incident has sparked tension along the border, with local residents expressing concern over the increasing frequency of such shootings. Cattle smuggling is a common issue in the area, often leading to clashes between smugglers and border security forces.
The BGB has reiterated its commitment to preventing illegal activities along the border and urged citizens to refrain from engaging in smuggling. Meanwhile, authorities are working to ensure the safe return of Al Amin’s body to his family for burial.
This incident highlights the ongoing challenges of border security and the risks associated with illegal cross-border activities. Both Bangladeshi and Indian authorities have been called upon to address the issue through dialogue and cooperation to prevent further loss of life.
