A Bangladeshi teenager was fatally shot near the Jaintapur border in Sylhet by members of the Indian Khasi community. The deceased, identified as 16-year-old Maruf Mia, was the son of Shahab Uddin from the Jhigabari village in Jaintapur Upazila. Maruf succumbed to his injuries on Thursday (December 26) while undergoing treatment at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital.

According to sources from the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and local witnesses, the incident occurred around midnight on Wednesday. Maruf, along with several others, reportedly entered the Minatila area near the border into an areca nut plantation owned by the Khasi community in India. A dispute ensued between the group and the Khasis, during which one of the Khasis fired a gun, hitting Maruf. His companions managed to bring him back to Bangladesh, where he was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. Despite receiving medical care, Maruf could not survive his injuries.

Lieutenant Colonel Hafizur Rahman, the commanding officer of the BGB's 48th Battalion, confirmed the incident. He stated that the BGB has formally lodged a protest with the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) regarding the matter. Further investigations are underway to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident and to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
