On the evening of January 8th, Mahin Sorkar, a member of the executive committee and former coordinator of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, announced a new protest plan. If justice is not served by 11 a.m. on January 9th regarding the 2009 BDR (Bangladesh Rifles) mutiny incident, a blockade will be organized at Shahbagh in Dhaka.

This announcement was made after Mahin Sorkar returned from a meeting at the Prime Minister's Advisor's residence. Sorkar stated that his group, along with the families of the victims, will hold a sit-in protest at the Central Shaheed Minar in Dhaka tonight. He emphasized that if there is no indication of justice by tomorrow morning, the protest will escalate to a blockade at Shahbagh.

Former BDR member from batch 46, K.A. Razzak, also voiced support for the protest and confirmed that they will continue their demonstration at the Shaheed Minar until justice is given. Razzak mentioned that they would wait there until the 11 a.m. deadline, and if no progress is made, they would proceed with their planned blockade at Shahbagh.

The protesters are demanding a retrial and proper justice for the families of those affected by the 2009 mutiny at the BDR headquarters in Pilkhana, which led to the killing of 74 individuals, including 57 army officers. They are also pushing for the reinstatement of dismissed BDR members and the release of those currently incarcerated due to their involvement in the mutiny.

Meanwhile, the families of dismissed BDR members and those in jail have issued an ultimatum for their release within 24 hours. They are also calling for the declaration of the day of the massacre as "Army Martyrs' Day." In addition, they have urged the inclusion of their demands in the July revolution’s declaration.

The incident was marked by a brutal mutiny, where the BDR personnel revolted against their superiors, resulting in widespread violence and deaths. 139 individuals were sentenced to death, 185 received life imprisonment, and 228 were given various prison terms, while 283 were acquitted.

The ongoing protests are part of a broader movement to seek justice for the victims, including the families of the BDR personnel, who claim that innocent people were wrongly imprisoned. This has sparked a significant rallying cry for a fair retrial, as well as for the proper recognition and compensation for those who suffered due to the events at Pilkhana.

The protesters are determined to continue their fight until they receive clear responses from the government. Should no action be taken by the morning of January 9th, their plan is to intensify the protest with the blockade at Shahbagh, a major intersection in Dhaka.

As the situation develops, it remains to be seen whether the government will address the concerns of the families and former BDR personnel, or if the protesters will be forced to escalate their actions further.
