The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) held a meeting with its political allies on December 21 to discuss the ongoing political situation in the country and strategize for a joint movement. The meeting, held at BNP Chairperson's Gulshan office in Dhaka, included representatives from the 12-party alliance, the Nationalist Minded Alliance, and the Labour Party.
During the meeting, senior leaders from the allied parties expressed their support for an immediate election in the country. They agreed that a free and fair election could only be ensured through cooperation with an interim government, which would oversee the election process. They emphasized the need for rapid actions to ensure a transparent and credible election process.
BNP General Secretary Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Standing Committee members Nazrul Islam Khan and Selima Rahman, and Vice Chairman Abdul Awal Mintoo attended the meeting. After the meeting, Nazrul Islam Khan spoke to the media, stating that they had discussed the current political and economic situation in the country, along with the various issues faced by the people. The leaders agreed on the urgency of a national discussion to resolve these crises and secure the public's trust in the upcoming elections.
The 12-party alliance, coordinated by the National Party’s (Kazi Jafar) Chairman Mostafa Jamal Haider, also participated in the discussions. Haider mentioned that while there had been extensive discussions regarding the country’s current situation, no final decisions were made during the meeting about specific steps or actions. However, the meeting set the groundwork for future strategic planning to address the political challenges ahead.
Additionally, another round of discussions took place with the Nationalist Minded Alliance and the Labour Party, with the respective leaders Fariduzzaman Farhad of the National People's Party (NPP) and Mustafizur Rahman Iran of the Bangladesh Labour Party attending.
The parties involved in the meetings emphasized the importance of unity and cooperation among opposition parties to press for an interim government and a quick return to a democratic process. The discussions reflect the growing concerns among opposition groups regarding the current administration’s handling of political and electoral matters in Bangladesh.
