The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) held a crucial meeting with interim government Chief Advisor Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus on Wednesday evening (November 27), emphasizing the urgent need for national unity amidst the country's volatile political situation. The meeting, which took place at the state guest house Jamuna around 6 PM, addressed the growing unrest across various parts of the nation, including incidents at educational institutions.
Following the meeting, Chief Advisor’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam briefed the media, stating that Dr. Yunus urged all stakeholders to maintain calm and avoid any actions that could exacerbate tensions. Highlighting the importance of fostering a collective sense of stability, the Chief Advisor called for national unity that includes individuals from all walks of life—students, workers, and the general public, regardless of religion or political affiliation.
Dr. Yunus also addressed recent unrest in Chattogram and elsewhere, urging everyone to refrain from violence. According to Shafiqul Alam, law enforcement has made 33 arrests related to these incidents, of which six individuals were directly involved in the attacks, 21 obstructed police operations or engaged in clashes, and another six were identified as members of Awami League and Chhatra League involved in attacks with crude explosives.
“We have taken necessary actions regarding false news by Reuters and are prioritizing measures to de-escalate tensions,” said the press secretary.
BNP’s Demand for National Unity
Speaking to the media after the meeting, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir stressed the necessity of forming a broad national unity to address the country’s challenges effectively. He reiterated that BNP has called on all political parties to engage in dialogue to build a unified front, essential for ensuring peace and stability in Bangladesh.
"At this critical juncture, national unity is our most pressing need. We are facing numerous challenges, including threats to our sovereignty and stability, which demand collective efforts to overcome," Fakhrul stated.
He also emphasized the importance of preventing divisions and promoting harmony among all sectors of society. Fakhrul expressed confidence in the interim government’s ability to resolve the current issues peacefully and swiftly.
The BNP delegation also urged the Chief Advisor to expedite the development of an election roadmap through comprehensive reforms and discussions with all political parties. According to Fakhrul, this would pave the way for a fair and transparent electoral process.
"We emphasized the importance of providing a clear roadmap for elections, which should be formulated after necessary reforms. The Chief Advisor and his team listened to our proposals attentively," he said.
Fakhrul further called for the withdrawal of politically motivated cases filed against BNP leaders and activists nationwide. "We have requested the interim government to take immediate steps to withdraw these cases, which are part of an attempt to suppress opposition voices," he added.
The BNP underscored the need for political harmony to safeguard Bangladesh’s sovereignty and stability. The party believes that a unified national approach is critical to countering forces that threaten the country’s independence or seek to disrupt its progress.
“Bangladesh stands at a crossroads, facing internal and external challenges. This is a moment for unity, not division. Only by coming together can we ensure a peaceful, stable, and prosperous future for our nation,” Fakhrul concluded.
The meeting between BNP and the Chief Advisor marks a significant step in addressing the country’s political impasse. Whether the call for unity and collaboration will translate into actionable outcomes remains to be seen. However, the dialogue signifies a shared understanding of the urgent need for stability in these turbulent times.
