The 89th birth anniversary of Ziaur Rahman, the founder of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and former President of Bangladesh, was observed in Keshabpur, Jashore, on Sunday, January 19. The event, organized jointly by the Upazila and Municipal BNP units, was held at the party's local office and featured a discussion session and special prayers.

The program was presided over by Abdus Samad Biswas, President of the Keshabpur Municipal BNP, while the chief guest was Abul Hossain Azad, a member of the BNP’s Central Executive Committee and President of the Keshabpur Upazila BNP. In his speech, Azad lauded Ziaur Rahman as a symbol of patriotism, integrity, and courage. He highlighted Zia’s pivotal role in declaring Bangladesh’s independence and actively participating in the Liberation War. Azad further credited Zia with raising the global profile of Bangladesh through his distinct leadership qualities and ensuring respect for the nation on the international stage during his tenure.

Azad emphasized Ziaur Rahman’s enduring legacy, stating that his integrity, dedication, and tireless efforts are still remembered with reverence by the people of Bangladesh. He noted that Zia's vision and political ideology have stood the test of time, inspiring generations. Azad also recounted Zia’s contributions to establishing multiparty democracy, freedom of speech, and press freedom, along with his efforts to make Bangladesh economically self-reliant. He described Zia as a leader who successfully awakened a sense of national pride and motivation among the people.

Azad remarked that even Ziaur Rahman’s political adversaries could never question his integrity, either during his life or after his death. This, he said, is why Zia remains deeply respected in the hearts of the people.

The event also featured speeches from other BNP leaders, including Sheikh Shahidul Islam, General Secretary of the Keshabpur Municipal BNP, Abdur Razzak, General Secretary of the Upazila BNP, and Humayun Kabir Suman, Organizational Secretary of the Upazila BNP.

Following the discussion session, a special prayer and supplication were held, seeking forgiveness for the soul of Ziaur Rahman and the speedy recovery of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia. The prayer was led by Alamgir Kabir, Organizational Secretary of the Keshabpur Upazila BNP.
