The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has submitted a comprehensive proposal for constitutional reforms, recommending 62 amendments. Key suggestions include limiting the prime minister’s term to two consecutive terms, introducing positions for deputy prime minister and vice president, establishing a bicameral parliament with an upper house, and provisions for referendums.
The proposal was officially handed over to the Constitution Reform Commission, led by Professor Ali Riaz, on Tuesday morning (November 26). BNP’s Standing Committee Member Salahuddin Ahmed led a delegation to the commission’s office at the Parliament Complex to deliver the party’s written recommendations.
Following the submission, Salahuddin Ahmed addressed the media, stating, "Our reform proposals focus on creating a balance of power among the state organs. The reform commission will finalize its recommendations and submit them to the government. Once a new government is elected, it will implement these amendments."
Nationwide Survey to Gather Public Opinion
Professor Ali Riaz, chair of the reform commission, announced that a nationwide survey would be conducted next week to gather opinions from citizens across all demographics, including rural and urban areas, as well as individuals of different age groups.
The Constitution Reform Commission had earlier invited political parties to submit their written suggestions for constitutional amendments. The commission has also been engaging with eminent citizens and other stakeholders to collect diverse perspectives on the reforms.
This initiative reflects BNP’s emphasis on modernizing the constitution to align with democratic principles and public aspirations. As the process unfolds, the commission aims to ensure a participatory approach by incorporating insights from all sections of society.
The reform discussions underscore the need for checks and balances within the government framework, promoting accountability and fair representation in decision-making processes.
