The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has submitted 62 proposals for amendments to the Constitution, covering various areas from the preamble to the electoral schedule. These proposals include the reintroduction of a caretaker government system during elections, the establishment of a bicameral parliament, the creation of the positions of Vice-President and Deputy Prime Minister, and efforts to balance the powers between the President and the Prime Minister.
On Tuesday, November 26, BNP leaders submitted their written proposals to the Constitution Amendment Commission at the National Parliament House. Following the submission, BNP's Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed briefed the media about the details of the proposals.
Ahmed stated that the party has suggested changes across 62 different sections of the Constitution, emphasizing new proposals aimed at ensuring political balance and preventing the rise of a parliamentary dictatorship in the future. He mentioned that the proposals are in line with the aspirations of the people and the promises made to the martyrs of the July-August revolution.
The proposals also include provisions for creating the offices of Vice-President and Deputy Prime Minister, with a focus on maintaining a balance of power among the executive, judiciary, and legislature. Salahuddin Ahmed further clarified that these proposals will be presented to the government by the Constitutional Reform Commission, and any disagreements will be settled by the elected government in the future.
Professor Ali Riaz, speaking to the press, noted that the Commission has yet to review the proposals but would engage in discussions with political parties to make the necessary recommendations. He emphasized that the interim government would decide on election-related matters, and the Commission would work on summarizing the proposed changes.
