Dhaka, January 2: The BNP has announced its intention to reassess alleged inequitable agreements made with India during the tenure of the Awami League government. BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir made this statement during a press conference held at the party chairperson’s office in Gulshan on Thursday morning.

Addressing the media, Alamgir criticized what he described as rampant corruption in the power sector under the Awami League government. He alleged that the administration, led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, had been involved in severe misconduct that had left the energy sector in disarray.

In the conference, a written statement was presented by BNP Standing Committee member Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku, who detailed allegations of mismanagement and corruption in the power sector. He accused the government of exploiting the energy industry, leaving the public burdened with the consequences.

Mirza Fakhrul emphasized the need for a systematic review of all agreements and contracts related to the energy sector. He stated that, if elected, the BNP would thoroughly investigate and reassess all energy and power-related contracts signed during the Awami League’s tenure and take necessary corrective measures. He further commented on the culture of impunity surrounding corruption within the government, stressing that repeated emphasis on these issues is crucial to prevent them from being overlooked by the public.

Tuku accused the government of impoverishing citizens through the mishandling of the power sector, claiming that corruption had infiltrated every corner of the industry. He stated that no aspect of the power sector was free from irregularities and alleged that the sector had been used as a tool for financial exploitation.

BNP Standing Committee member Nazrul Islam Khan also spoke during the event, asserting that the power sector had been transformed into a profit-driven enterprise over the last 15 years. According to him, the corruption in this sector has created an unsustainable burden on the people, and the so-called progress in energy development was neither sustainable nor resilient. He warned that the sector could collapse at any moment due to its fragile state.

Khan called for transparency, urging an interim government to disclose all agreements related to the power sector to ensure accountability. The BNP reiterated its commitment to address these issues if they come to power, pledging to implement sustainable reforms in the energy sector.
