BNP has expressed serious concerns over inaccuracies regarding the party’s history in academic textbooks and called for immediate rectification. In a press conference held at the party's central office in Naya Paltan, Dhaka, on Saturday, Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi urged authorities to amend the textbooks promptly, ensuring that students are presented with accurate and impartial historical information.
Rizvi highlighted that the newly revised and reprinted textbook for ninth and tenth-grade students, titled “Civics and Citizenship”, contains misleading information about BNP’s founding. He pointed out that on page 73, under the chapter titled “Political Parties and Electoral Systems in Democracy”, the book claims BNP was established in a military cantonment, a statement he described as an attempt to undermine the party’s reputation.
The BNP leader clarified that the party’s formation did not occur under military auspices. He said, “We are deeply concerned about an ongoing conspiracy against BNP. Presenting incorrect information about the party in school textbooks is part of this scheme. Let me state unequivocally that BNP is not a party born in a military cantonment.”
Explaining the origins of the party, Rizvi said, “On September 1, 1978, the late President Ziaur Rahman announced the formation of BNP at a press conference held at Ramna Restaurant in Dhaka, not under any military directive. At the time, he was the elected President of the country. Claiming otherwise is a blatant distortion of history.”
Rizvi criticized the description of BNP in the textbook as part of a broader effort to tarnish the party's legacy. He further alleged that the book promotes a biased narrative, favoring the ruling party. “The revised textbook refers to the Awami League as the largest political party in the country while spreading false propaganda and slander against BNP. This reflects the relentless campaign against BNP during Sheikh Hasina’s 16 years of governance,” Rizvi remarked.
The BNP leader demanded a thorough investigation into the National Curriculum and Textbook Board (NCTB) to identify individuals involved in these alleged distortions. “Fascist collaborators within and outside the NCTB must be identified and brought under strict legal measures,” he stated.
He called upon the authorities to swiftly revise the textbook and present an unbiased and factual version of history to safeguard the integrity of education and protect young minds from misinformation.
Several senior BNP leaders, including Chairperson’s Adviser Zainul Abdin Farroque, Joint Secretary General Syed Emran Saleh Prince, and others, were present at the press conference.
