At Bangladesh Youth Parliament Event, Fakhrul Advocates for Free Elections, Accountability, and Youth Empowerment
Addressing the importance of elections and democratic reform, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir emphasized his commitment to democracy, stating that genuine reform requires public involvement. Fakhrul made these remarks on Saturday afternoon at the Supreme Court Bar Association auditorium during the Bangladesh Youth Parliament event, organized by the National Youth Forum.
Fakhrul explained, "We continuously highlight the need for elections because, fundamentally, I believe in democracy. Reforms cannot succeed without the active participation of the people." He pointed out that an elected parliament ensures citizen engagement, essential for fostering democratic practices.
He criticized the current state of governance under the ruling party, saying, “The interim government’s role would be to clear the hurdles left by the Awami League and pave the way for fair elections, enabling us to realize the vision of a new Bangladesh that the youth aspire to.”
Fakhrul also cautioned against negative rhetoric that could give rise to fascism, urging media outlets to avoid promoting divisive narratives. “Fascism is beginning to resurface due to various forms of negative rhetoric, some of which are unfortunately amplified by certain media. This won’t serve the people’s interests,” he added.
Emphasizing patience and resilience in the face of ongoing challenges, Fakhrul advised, “The current crisis can only be resolved through structured reforms and free elections. We need to ensure that these processes are conducted smoothly.”
Taking a supportive stance on the interim government, Fakhrul noted, “This government needs time. We have tasked them with important reforms, and in three months, they have made notable progress—forming commissions, amending laws, and detaining some key fascist allies.”
He encouraged youth involvement, saying, “To the youth, I urge patience. We believe in the leadership guiding this government, which includes students and young people. This opportunity for change is invaluable; we must not let it slip away, or we risk our national integrity.”
The event was moderated by National Youth Forum President Aminul Islam Munir, with speeches from other prominent figures, including Zonayed Saki of the Gonosonghoti Andolon, Bobby Hajjaj of the National Democratic Movement, and Supreme Court Bar Association leader Mahbub Uddin Khokon.
The families of Hafez Mohammad Imran, who lost his life, and Hafez Tofayel Ahmed, who was injured during the July-August student protests, were provided with financial assistance at the event.
