On Monday, December 22, the body of 21-year-old Mohammad Hasan Fahim, also known as Naim, was exhumed from his grave in the village of Purbaramchandrapur, located in the Fivebibi area of Joypurhat district. Naim had died over four months ago, on August 5, during a student protest against discrimination, when a fire broke out in the house of the mayor of Hakkimpur.

The exhumation took place under the direction of the judicial authorities, and the local authorities were present, including the Assistant Commissioner and Executive Magistrate of Joypurhat, Jahangir Alam. Hakkimpur Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge Sujan Miya, Investigation Officer Sub-Inspector Mustafizur Rahman, and other local police officers were also at the scene.

After completing the preliminary examination, the body was sent for an autopsy to the Dinajpur Medical College Hospital. Naim was the son of Abdul Malek from Purbaramchandrapur, Fivebibi.

Executive Magistrate Jahangir Alam explained that the exhumation was conducted following the instructions of the Senior Judicial Magistrate of Hakkimpur. He also emphasized his role in maintaining law and order during the exhumation process.

Hakkimpur Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge, Sujan Miya, recalled the tragic events of August 5, when two young men, Naim and Surya, were killed in a fire at the Hakkimpur Municipality Mayor Jamil Hossain Cholon’s house. This fire occurred during a protest movement by students against social discrimination. On August 19, Surya’s brother Sujan filed a murder case with Hakkimpur police, accusing various individuals, including the mayor, members of the ruling party, and some 90-100 unidentified people. Surya’s body had already been exhumed earlier and subjected to autopsy.

Following the judicial magistrate’s order, the body of Naim was exhumed for an autopsy to determine the cause of his death. The exhumation of both bodies follows the unfortunate deaths that occurred in the midst of a student uprising, calling for the resignation of the government.

On the day of the incident, the students had gathered in protest against the government, which had been accused of promoting discrimination. The protests escalated, leading to a violent clash in which a fire was set to the mayor’s residence. Fire service personnel recovered the charred bodies of Naim and Surya from the fire. The incident sparked widespread outrage and protests in various parts of the country.

The case involving the deaths of the two young men has attracted significant attention. On August 19, a murder case was filed, and many members of the local ruling party were named as suspects. This includes the MP for Dinajpur-6, Shibly Sadiq, and the chairman of Hakkimpur Upazila, Harun Ur Rashid. The accusations were related to the fire, and authorities are continuing their investigation.

As of now, the exhumation of Naim’s body and the autopsy are expected to shed further light on the cause of death and could lead to new developments in the case.
