Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has affirmed its complete readiness and vigilance to prevent any untoward incidents or hostile activities along the country’s borders. In a statement issued on Tuesday afternoon from its headquarters, the BGB highlighted its commitment to safeguarding the nation’s border security.
Shariful Islam, BGB's Public Relations Officer, assured the media that the force is fully prepared to address any unexpected situations or illicit activities that may arise at the borders. The announcement comes amidst heightened concerns over recent political developments and cross-border provocations.
Following the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government on August 5 due to a mass student uprising, sporadic incidents of political violence were reported across Bangladesh. These incidents have reportedly been exaggerated by certain Indian media outlets, fueling misinformation campaigns on social media platforms like Facebook, X, and YouTube. This propaganda escalated following the arrest of former ISKCON leader Chinmoy Krishna Das on charges of sedition.
The inflammatory content has incited actions from radical Hindu nationalist groups in India. On Monday, such a group attacked the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission in Agartala, desecrating the Bangladeshi flag. Additionally, demonstrations targeting Bangladesh were held across the border in Benapole, Feni, and Sylhet, where participants made provocative remarks against the country. Reports from Assamese media suggest an attempt by extremists to infiltrate Bangladesh through the Sylhet border.
In light of these developments, concerns have grown in border regions, prompting the BGB to underscore its readiness. The force has reaffirmed its capability to manage any provocations and maintain stability along the country’s extensive border.
The incidents underscore the rising tension in the region, fueled by both misinformation and radical actions. The attack on the diplomatic mission in Agartala has further strained relations between the two neighbors, with Bangladesh calling for accountability and assurances of safety for its missions in India.
BGB’s heightened vigilance reflects its role in preventing any spillover of these tensions into Bangladesh's territory. The agency continues to monitor the situation closely and has urged communities in border regions to remain calm while it works to ensure their security.
