On Thursday, Chief Adviser Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus urged the citizens of Bangladesh to dedicate themselves to societal welfare with a focus on the greater good during the inauguration of National Social Service Day 2025. The event was organized by the Department of Social Services and featured a walkathon and a conference held at the South Plaza of the National Parliament.
Dr. Yunus, during his speech, emphasized that societal service should not be limited to governmental efforts alone, but should be embraced by individuals. He stressed the importance of people integrating public service into their daily lives and working for the well-being of others, alongside personal interests.
The Chief Adviser highlighted that, if everyone made an effort to work not only for their own benefit but also for others, many of the society's pressing issues could be solved without waiting for external help. He called on individuals to activate the inherent power within themselves to contribute to the welfare of others.
In his speech, Dr. Yunus also dismissed the misconception that the sole purpose of an individual’s efforts is to earn money for personal gain. He argued that the power of individuals surpasses even that of the government, and thus, it is crucial to awaken and harness that potential.
Dr. Yunus further stated that social businesses, which serve the interests of others, could be a significant means of promoting public welfare. He encouraged individuals, particularly the youth, to understand that business could serve both personal and societal benefits. This concept could extend to addressing challenges in sectors such as health and education, which remain underdeveloped in some areas.
The Chief Adviser explained that social welfare should be considered a part of everyone’s work, not something imposed upon them. He emphasized the need for individuals to balance personal and communal interests, advocating for a society where the service to others becomes an inherent practice.
In conclusion, Dr. Yunus called upon the Ministry of Social Welfare to remind the citizens of their responsibility to serve others, ensuring that this call reaches every corner of society. He encouraged people to recognize the joy that comes from working for the welfare of others, stating that the fulfillment derived from helping others is greater than that from working solely for oneself.
At the event, Social Welfare Adviser Sharmeen S. Murshid and three student representatives from July Biplob also delivered speeches.
