Dhaka, Monday – Algerian Ambassador to Bangladesh, Abdelwahab Saidani, has extended an official invitation to Chief Adviser Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus to visit Algeria. The invitation underscores Algeria’s continued support for Bangladesh’s interim government.

During a meeting at the state guesthouse Jamuna in Dhaka, the Algerian ambassador conveyed his government’s message to the chief adviser. In response, Professor Yunus invited Algeria’s head of government to visit Bangladesh and urged Algeria to send a business delegation to strengthen trade and investment ties between the two countries.

The Algerian ambassador affirmed that his country would maintain political and economic support for Bangladesh. He also revealed that Algeria’s Minister of Energy is scheduled to visit Dhaka in March. In addition, Algeria is planning to expand imports of Bangladeshi products, including textiles, jute, pharmaceuticals, food, and electronics.

During the discussion, the chief adviser sought Algeria’s support for Bangladesh’s candidacy in key international bodies, including the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Council, the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), and the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).

Bangladesh is contesting the IMO Council Category-C elections for the 2026-27 term, scheduled to take place in December 2025 in London. The country is also seeking membership in the UNHRC for the 2028-30 term, with elections set for 2027 in New York. Additionally, Bangladesh will compete for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for the 2031-32 term, with the election slated for 2030 in New York.

Senior Secretary and Chief Coordinator for SDG Affairs Lamia Morshed, along with BM Jamal Hossain, Director General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, were present at the meeting.
