The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has reported the discovery of "some bones" at the demolished residence of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at Dhanmondi 32. On Monday (February 10) at around 8:00 AM, CID’s Crime Scene Unit, in the presence of Dhanmondi police, arrived at the site to collect evidence.
Dhanmondi Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Ali Ahmed Masud confirmed the discovery, stating, "Some bones have been found at House 32. The CID’s Crime Scene Unit has collected the evidence to determine whether they belong to a human or another species."
After collecting the samples, the CID team left the site at around 10:15 AM.
The demolition of the historic residence began on Wednesday, coinciding with six months since Sheikh Hasina’s ousting and exile. Protesters from a "bulldozer march" event initiated the destruction of the house. On Thursday, the site saw widespread looting, followed by a feast where cattle were slaughtered, and biryani was prepared and distributed among the crowd.
Since that day, people have been seen scavenging through the rubble, using hammers to extract iron rods from the remains of the building. Some have been digging through the debris for electrical wiring, while others have been dismantling still-standing portions in search of valuable materials.
The demolition was triggered by the online speech of fugitive former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on February 5, which sparked outrage among students and protesters. The crowd gathered near a nearby under-construction building, where they discovered multiple basement levels. While they managed to descend two floors, further access was blocked by water accumulation, leading to speculation that additional underground levels existed.
Discussions regarding the site intensified over the following days, prompting authorities to intervene. On Sunday morning, the Fire Service began pumping out water from the basement. Their work concluded at approximately 1:15 PM, after which they vacated the site.
On Monday, the CID’s Crime Scene Unit arrived to collect evidence as part of the ongoing investigation into the incident.
