A violent clash occurred on Saturday (November 23) in Brahmanbaria between two factions of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, stemming from a dispute over the formation of a committee. The incident took place at the Government Model Girls’ High School premises in the municipal town of Brahmanbaria in the afternoon. Several people were injured during the altercation.
Among the injured, two individuals, Burhan Uddin (21) and Faisal (27), were taken to hospitals for treatment. Faisal is currently receiving care at Brahmanbaria Sadar Hospital, while Burhan is being treated at Brahmanbaria Medical College Hospital.
According to sources from the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, the conflict began after the central committee's directive led to a meeting inside the school. Students from the city and nearby towns and upazilas attended the gathering to discuss the movement's stance. During the meeting, the issue of committee formation sparked tension, splitting the attendees into two factions. Disagreements quickly escalated into a physical confrontation, resulting in injuries.
Brahmanbaria Sadar Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge (OC), Mozzafar Hossain, confirmed the altercation, stating that the clash was due to a disagreement over the committee formation. He mentioned that the identities of the individuals involved in the clash were under investigation. The OC also added that four to five people had been injured, but no formal complaints had been filed with the police regarding the incident. He assured that legal action would be taken if complaints were submitted.
This conflict highlights the ongoing internal tensions within student movements, often triggered by organizational disputes and leadership disagreements, and raises concerns about the potential for further escalation.
