A dispute over the size of names on a banner led to violent clashes between two factions of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in Gobindaganj, Gaibandha. The incident, involving stone-throwing and multiple chases, unfolded on Wednesday evening, leaving the area in a state of tension and fear.

The altercation occurred between 7:00 PM and 8:30 PM in the municipal town’s Kuthibari Road, Thana Mor, and Bazar Road areas. Witnesses and local police reported that the conflict arose between the supporters of Faruq Kabir Ahmed, Vice-President of the District BNP and former Chairman of Gobindaganj Upazila Parishad, and Faruq Ahmed, Convener of the Upazila BNP.

Faruq Ahmed explained that the dispute began during preparations for an event to commemorate the anniversary of the student wing, Chhatra Dal. The issue stemmed from the size of the names printed on the event banner. He alleged that Faruq Kabir Ahmed’s supporters became agitated over the smaller size of his name and removed the banner in protest. The removal of the banner heightened tensions, leading to heated exchanges and eventual violence.

Ahmed further claimed that his group was later attacked by the rival faction while they were inside the party office, forcing them to retaliate. He dismissed the incident as a minor altercation blown out of proportion, stating that no other significant incidents occurred.

Efforts to reach Faruq Kabir Ahmed for comments were unsuccessful, as his mobile phone was found switched off.

The clashes have sparked widespread concern among locals, who fear further disruptions in the area. Authorities are monitoring the situation to prevent further escalation.
