A syndicate is reportedly attempting to destabilize the maritime sector by threatening contractors responsible for supplying goods and services to various cargo ships and oil tankers operating in the Bay of Bengal and the Karnaphuli River. Allegations have surfaced that this group is pressuring shipping service providers to seize control of the business.

In response to these threats, Iqbal Hossain, the owner of Khaja Shipping Lines, has filed a formal complaint with Chattogram City Corporation Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain. Additionally, he has lodged a General Diary (GD) at the EPZ police station and submitted a written complaint to the District Commissioner.

The complaint specifically names four individuals allegedly involved in the threats: Mohammad Shukkur Saudagar, Mohammad Taslim, Mohammad Rafiq Majhi, and Monir.

According to reports, this syndicate has long been creating instability in the maritime sector. They have also been accused of engaging in criminal activities, including stealing fuel from various ships.

Industry insiders have revealed that Khaja Shipping Lines provides essential services such as manpower, food supplies, rice, poultry, and fuel to cargo ships and oil tankers at the Padma, Meghna, Jamuna, and RM Jetty No. 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 9 docks. However, over the past few weeks, this contractor has faced aggressive attempts to displace them from their role. Despite being a legally appointed contractor under prominent groups such as High-Speed Group and Kingfisher Group, they are now facing threats from the syndicate.

During the tenure of the previous government, this syndicate reportedly coerced oil tanker captains and crew members into handing over government fuel. Additionally, there have been allegations of fuel theft from ships stationed mid-sea, carried out in collusion with certain individuals.

In his written complaint, Iqbal Hossain stated that his company provides boat services to various ships, including vessels operating under private charters and local trips supplying furnace oil, diesel, octane, and petrol to different power plants.

He further alleged that the syndicate has been issuing various threats to him and his employees. They have also been intimidating ship staff, boat operators, and other personnel involved in the operations, warning them of false legal cases if they do not comply with their demands.

As tensions rise, industry stakeholders are calling for immediate action from the authorities to ensure the safety of contractors and prevent further disruptions to the maritime sector in Chattogram. Law enforcement agencies are expected to investigate the matter and take necessary measures to protect legitimate businesses operating within the sector.
