Dhaka, November 29 (Online Desk) – The deep depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify into a cyclone later today, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD). If it transforms into a cyclone, it will be named ‘Fengal.’ However, the system is unlikely to have significant direct effects on Bangladesh, apart from light rain in coastal areas.

In anticipation, maritime ports have been instructed to hoist cautionary signal number 1.

The depression was reported to be moving slightly north-northwest, maintaining its position in the southwest Bay of Bengal and adjacent areas. As of Thursday morning, the system was located approximately 1,825 km southwest of Chattogram port, 1,770 km southwest of Cox’s Bazar port, 1,715 km southwest of Mongla port, and 1,710 km southwest of Payra port.

Cyclone Trajectory and Impact
The BMD forecasts that the system, after forming into a cyclone, will likely head towards Sri Lanka. The deep depression has sustained wind speeds of up to 50 km/h within a 48-km radius, with gusts reaching up to 60 km/h. The sea remains rough near the center of the depression.

Coastal regions of Bangladesh may experience light rainfall due to the outer bands of the system. However, there are no significant threats of severe weather for Bangladesh's mainland.

Precautionary Measures
Maritime ports, including Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla, and Payra, have been advised to continue displaying cautionary signal number 1. Fishermen and trawlers operating in the northern Bay of Bengal and deep-sea areas are urged to remain near the coast and proceed with caution until further notice.

The Meteorological Department also advises monitoring updates closely as the system evolves.

As Bangladesh remains vigilant, authorities assure citizens that all necessary precautions are in place to minimize any potential impact.
