Cyclone ‘Finjal,’ currently positioned over the southwest Bay of Bengal, continues its northwestward movement, prompting the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) to issue cautionary measures. All four major seaports—Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla, and Payra—have been instructed to hoist distant cautionary signal number 2.
In a special bulletin issued this morning, BMD reported that as of 6 AM Saturday, the cyclone was located at 12.0°N latitude and 81.0°E longitude. It was approximately:
- 1,650 km southwest of Chattogram Port,
- 1,605 km southwest of Cox’s Bazar Port,
- 1,505 km southwest of Mongla Port, and
- 1,515 km southwest of Payra Port.
The storm is expected to continue its west-northwest trajectory and make landfall along the northern Tamil Nadu coast by midday today.
Storm Intensity and Sea Conditions
Within a 54 km radius of its center, Cyclone Finjal is generating sustained wind speeds of up to 62 km/h, with gusts reaching as high as 88 km/h. This has resulted in extremely rough sea conditions near the cyclone's core.
The BMD has advised all fishing boats and trawlers in the north Bay of Bengal and deep sea areas to remain close to the coast and exercise caution until further notice.
Potential Impact on Bangladesh
Although the cyclone is not currently expected to hit Bangladesh directly, its peripheral effects may bring moderate to heavy rainfall and strong winds to coastal areas. Authorities remain vigilant, urging preparedness in vulnerable regions to minimize risks from potential storm surges or localized flooding.
Residents in low-lying areas are advised to stay informed through official updates and adhere to safety directives.
