A rally and protest march, organized by the Democracy Platform, was held on Tuesday, December 24, at Purana Paltan intersection in Dhaka, urging the government to tackle rampant inflation, ensure public safety, and address the deteriorating law and order situation.

Top leaders of the Democracy Platform voiced grave concerns over the state of the economy and governance during the rally. They criticized the government’s inability to control soaring market prices even after four and a half months of repeated failures. Highlighting the unchecked influence of profiteering syndicates, they pointed out the government’s lack of visible action against these groups.

Speakers at the event condemned the worsening law and order situation, citing a rise in alarming incidents that indicate a state of social chaos. They demanded immediate measures to address these crises.

Mahmudur Rahman Manna, President of Nagorik Oikya, accused the government of failing to demonstrate any effective governance. He pointed out that, despite political support, the administration has avoided open dialogue with political parties. Manna remarked, “Multiple governments seem to be operating within the current regime, creating confusion. Open discussions about these problems could lead to solutions.”

Saiful Haque, General Secretary of the Revolutionary Workers Party, stated that their support has allowed the public to endure the government thus far. He questioned why, after the ousting of fascists, they should have to take to the streets again. Haque warned the government not to test people’s patience and added, “Hunger cannot be cured with promises of reforms.” He urged that reforms not be positioned as alternatives to free elections.

Sheikh Rafiqul Islam Bablu, Convener of the Bhasani Followers Council, strongly condemned the recent humiliation of a senior freedom fighter in Cumilla. He labeled it an insult to both the Liberation War and its heroes, demanding the immediate arrest and punishment of the culprits.

Senior Vice President of the Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD), Siraj Mia, criticized the government for making grand claims while failing to deliver tangible results. He warned the administration to ensure that people’s dreams are not shattered.

The rally, presided over by Abul Hasan Rubel, Executive Coordinator of the Gonoshonghoti Andolon, was attended by several prominent figures, including Saiful Haque, Sheikh Rafiqul Islam Bablu, and Siraj Mia, who shared their concerns and urged the government to act swiftly.

Following the rally, a protest march proceeded through Topkhana Road and the Press Club, concluding back at Purana Paltan.
