The Democratic Students’ Council (Bagchas), a newly formed student organization led by former coordinators of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, has found itself in an image crisis just two weeks after its launch. The group has suspended two of its leaders over allegations of extortion and incitement of mob violence, as internal clashes and misconduct threaten to derail its credibility.

The organization, which was officially launched on February 26 at Dhaka University’s Madhu’s Canteen, has been embroiled in controversy since its inception. On the very day of its launch, infighting and physical altercations among members drew public criticism. The latest scandal involves allegations of extortion and spreading misinformation to incite mob violence, leading to the suspension of two key leaders.

In response, Bagchas has adopted a zero-tolerance policy toward corruption, extortion, and unethical activities. The organization’s top leaders have announced that any member found involved in such activities will face immediate expulsion and legal action.

The first suspension involved Golam Kibria Apu, joint convener of the central committee, who was accused of demanding a bribe of 50,000 BDT from a Wi-Fi service provider on campus. After negotiations, Apu allegedly settled for 30,000 BDT. Following an investigation, Bagchas suspended Apu, citing a violation of organizational ethics.

The second suspension targeted Kazi Mazharul Islam, an organizer of the group, for allegedly inciting mob violence by spreading false information on social media. Mazharul’s actions reportedly led to chaotic situations on campus, prompting the organization to take disciplinary action.

Central Convener Abu Bakar Majumdar emphasized that Bagchas will not tolerate any form of corruption, extortion, or unethical behavior. “We will not hesitate to take strict action against anyone involved in such activities. Our goal is to uphold the values of the July Uprising and ensure transparency and accountability within the organization,” he stated.

Central Member Secretary Zahid Ahsan reiterated the organization’s commitment to a zero-tolerance policy, adding, “We will continue to work towards fulfilling the aspirations of the July Uprising. Those who betray these principles will face severe consequences.”

Dhaka University Chapter Convener Abdul Kader highlighted the organization’s commitment to moderate politics and disciplined conduct, stating, “We are rooted in the spirit of the July Uprising. There is no room for unruly behavior in our ranks. We are taking decisive action to address these isolated incidents and move forward with our mission.”

As Bagchas works to restore its image, the suspensions mark a critical step in addressing internal challenges and reaffirming its commitment to ethical leadership and student welfare.
