The dengue outbreak in Bangladesh has reached alarming levels, with the death toll surpassing 500 this year. Health officials report an increasing number of hospital admissions, highlighting the severity of the crisis. According to the Health Emergency Operations Center and Control Room, seven more fatalities were recorded in the last 24 hours, bringing the total deaths from dengue to 504 in 2024.

In the same period, 629 patients were admitted to hospitals nationwide due to dengue fever. The distribution of new cases reveals the widespread impact of the outbreak. Outside the city corporation areas of Barisal, 55 new cases were recorded, while 54 cases emerged in non-city areas of Chittagong. The Dhaka division reported 133 cases outside city corporation jurisdictions, along with 113 cases in Dhaka North City Corporation and 111 in Dhaka South City Corporation. Other affected regions include Khulna with 92 cases, Mymensingh with 30, Rajshahi with 28, Rangpur with 12, and Sylhet with a single case reported.

In the last 24 hours alone, 842 dengue patients were discharged from hospitals. Since January, a total of 90,622 patients have recovered from the disease. However, the cumulative number of dengue cases this year stands at 93,685, indicating the vast scale of the epidemic. The data shows that men comprise 63.2% of the infected population, while women account for 36.8%.

The comparison with previous years reveals a worrying trend. In 2023, dengue claimed the lives of 1,705 individuals and resulted in 321,179 hospital admissions, marking the highest annual figures recorded in Bangladesh’s history.

Despite ongoing efforts to control the spread of the Aedes mosquito, which transmits the virus, the outbreak continues to pose significant challenges to public health and healthcare infrastructure. The rising mortality rate underscores the urgent need for intensified prevention measures, community awareness campaigns, and effective treatment strategies to combat the disease.

As authorities work to address the crisis, they urge citizens to eliminate mosquito breeding sites, use protective measures, and seek medical attention promptly if symptoms arise. With the monsoon season exacerbating mosquito proliferation, experts emphasize the critical importance of collective action to mitigate the devastating impact of dengue in the country.
