Bangladesh is grappling with a significant dengue outbreak, as the total number of hospitalizations approaches 97,000 this year. According to a press release issued by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) on Monday evening, December 9, a total of 478 new dengue cases were reported in the last 24 hours, while 595 patients were discharged from hospitals.
Since January 1, 2024, a total of 96,706 dengue patients have been admitted to hospitals across the country, with 94,062 recovering and being discharged. However, the mosquito-borne disease has claimed 531 lives so far this year, including two more deaths reported in the last 24 hours. One death occurred in Dhaka North City Corporation, and the other in a region outside Dhaka city.
The DGHS report detailed the geographical distribution of new hospital admissions. Within the last 24 hours, 104 patients were admitted in Dhaka North City, 88 in Dhaka South City, and 103 in areas of Dhaka division outside the city corporations. Other divisions reported cases as follows: 35 in Barishal, 41 in Chattogram, 60 in Khulna, 33 in Rajshahi, 7 in Mymensingh, 4 in Rangpur, and 3 in Sylhet.
Of the total hospitalizations this year, 63.10% are male patients, while 36.90% are female. Conversely, among the deceased, 51.60% were female, and 48.40% were male.
The ongoing outbreak has caused widespread concern due to its scope and severity. Health authorities continue to monitor the situation and emphasize the importance of public awareness and preventive measures to combat the spread of Aedes mosquitoes, the primary vector of dengue fever.
