To address disruptions caused by dense fog, the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) has designated Chattogram's Shah Amanat International Airport and Sylhet's Osmani International Airport as alternatives for flights unable to land at Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport. This move eliminates the need for diverted flights to land in foreign airports, ensuring they can now be accommodated within the country.
CAAB Chairman Air Vice Marshal Md. Mofidur Rahman shared this update on Sunday during a visit to Shah Amanat International Airport. He emphasized that the new arrangements will improve operational efficiency during adverse weather conditions. He further directed that Shah Amanat International Airport remains operational 24/7 for four days a week, while Osmani International Airport will operate similarly for the remaining three days.
During his visit, the CAAB chairman inspected various ongoing projects at Shah Amanat International Airport, including passenger terminal upgrades, lounge improvements, runway enhancements, new boarding bridges, and additional facilities such as a children’s park and driveways. He expressed satisfaction with the progress of these projects.
Accompanying the chairman were CAAB Member (Operations and Planning) Air Commodore Abu Sayeed Mehbub Khan, Member (Finance) S.M. Lablu Rahman, and the Director of Shah Amanat International Airport, Group Captain Sheikh Abdullah Al Mamun.
Meanwhile, dense fog has also disrupted operations at Syedpur Airport in Nilphamari. On Friday, flights scheduled for 8:00 AM experienced significant delays due to visibility dropping to as low as 50 meters, well below the minimum requirement of 2,000 meters for safe flight operations. Passengers faced prolonged waits on the runway, highlighting the challenges posed by winter weather.
Lokman Hakim, acting officer of the Syedpur Met Office, reported that the region was shrouded in heavy fog from early morning, with temperatures recorded at 18.5°C. Despite the challenges, authorities are working to minimize disruptions and ensure passenger safety.
