The Dhaka University administration has declared a day of mourning following the tragic death of student Shahriar Alam Samya. In response to the incident, the university has also announced the suspension of all classes and examinations for half the day on Thursday, May 15.

The announcement was made by Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Niaz Ahmed Khan during a press briefing on Wednesday, May 14. Earlier in the day, senior officials of the university held an emergency meeting at the Senate Building to discuss the implications and institutional response following the incident.

The emergency meeting was attended by key stakeholders, including an adviser from the Ministry of Local Government, the Secretary and Chief Engineer of the Ministry of Housing and Public Works, and an Assistant Commissioner from Dhaka Metropolitan Police. The university leadership and representatives from various administrative and academic departments were also present.

At the conclusion of the meeting, Vice-Chancellor Dr. Khan addressed the press and stated that the university is profoundly saddened by the loss of Shahriar Alam Samya. He emphasized that the entire Dhaka University community is in mourning and will observe a formal day of grief on Thursday.

He further announced that all academic activities, including classes and examinations, will remain suspended for the first half of the day as a mark of respect and remembrance. The Vice-Chancellor called on students, faculty members, and staff to stand in solidarity with Samya’s family and peers during this difficult time.

The university has not yet released detailed information regarding the circumstances surrounding Shahriar Alam Samya’s death. However, the incident has generated significant concern and sorrow among students and faculty members, prompting swift administrative action.

Throughout the campus, grief and shock were evident among the student body following news of the death.
