Dhaka, Monday (January 27) — Seven colleges in Dhaka will no longer be affiliated with Dhaka University (DU) starting from the 2024-25 academic session. The decision to discontinue the affiliation was made in a meeting held on Monday between the Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University, Professor Dr. Niaz Ahmed Khan, and the principals of the seven colleges.
The meeting concluded that the seven colleges, which have been affiliated with Dhaka University, would be separated with a focus on honoring their individual autonomy. The decision also includes halting the admission process for these colleges under Dhaka University from the upcoming academic year.
As part of the new changes, the university has decided to alter the previous plans regarding the admission process for students of the seven colleges, bringing it forward to the 2024-25 session. The specialized committee formed by the Ministry of Education on December 29, 2024, is expected to guide the new admission system and operational procedures for the next academic years.
The committee will be responsible for setting seat allocations, admission fees, and other necessary criteria for the upcoming session, taking into account the demands of the students. The changes are expected to streamline the process, ensuring a more organized approach to the admission and education of students in these colleges.
However, current students who are already enrolled in the ongoing academic sessions under Dhaka University’s supervision will continue their education under the university’s administration to ensure that their academic progress is not disrupted.
The meeting, chaired by Vice-Chancellor Professor Niaz Ahmed Khan, was attended by key university officials including the Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Administration, Saima Haque Bidisha, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Education, Mamun Ahmed, Treasurer Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, and deans of various faculties such as Siddiqur Rahman Khan from the Faculty of Arts, Abdus Salam from the Faculty of Science, and Rasheda Irshad Nasir from the Faculty of Social Sciences.
The separation marks a significant shift in the educational structure for the seven colleges, and it will have a profound impact on future student admissions and university administration. The decision aims to create a more independent system for the colleges while ensuring that the quality of education remains intact for all students.
