The onset of the Bengali month of Poush has brought a noticeable increase in the winter chill across the country. However, in recent days, Dhaka has experienced a slight decline in the intensity of cold, despite the city witnessing overcast skies on Saturday.
Meanwhile, due to the influence of a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal, light drizzles have begun in coastal regions, including Kalapara in Patuakhali. Reports of intermittent rain have also come from districts like Lakshmipur and Chandpur. This combination of cold weather and rain has exacerbated the challenges faced by residents in the coastal areas. Tourists visiting Kuakata are also struggling with dense fog and biting cold.
From early Saturday morning, the skies over the coastal areas have been covered with thick, dark clouds. The light rain, which began during the early hours of dawn, has spread across the entire coastal belt. Farmers, low-income workers, and tourists in Kuakata have been the most affected by these conditions.
According to the Meteorological Department, the low-pressure system may cause gusty winds in the coastal regions. Consequently, all maritime ports, including Payra in Patuakhali, have been advised to hoist Signal No. 1 as a precaution.
The department further explained that the well-marked low-pressure system over the southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas has intensified into a depression and is currently located over the west-central Bay and adjacent areas. This has led to overcast skies and light rainfall in several places, particularly in Patuakhali. The combination of rain and cold has made life difficult for residents, particularly low-income families. Fishermen out in the deep sea are also facing significant challenges due to adverse weather conditions.
Akter Jahan, the acting officer of the Patuakhali Weather Office, confirmed that the low-pressure system may bring gusty winds to the coastal areas. Maritime ports, including Payra, have been instructed to continue displaying Signal No. 1. Additionally, all fishing trawlers have been advised to remain near the coast and navigate cautiously.
