Gazipur Metropolitan Police (GMP) has imposed a restriction on flying drones within a two-kilometer radius of the Tongi Ijtema ground without official permission. This directive, issued in a public notice signed by Metropolitan Police Commissioner Nazmul Karim on Sunday afternoon, will remain in effect until February 18.
According to the public notice, the World Ijtema-2025 is currently being held at the Ijtema ground under the jurisdiction of Tongi West Police Station in Gazipur. The event attracts millions of devout Muslims from both home and abroad. To ensure the security of worshippers and maintain overall law and order, the police have requested that no drones, drone cameras, or other electronic flying devices be used within the designated area without prior approval from the Counter-Terrorism and Special Branch (CTSB). The notice further warns that legal action will be taken against those who violate this directive.
Additionally, the directive applies to government agencies as well, requiring them to inform the CTSB about the number of drones and the timing of their operations before deploying them.
The announcement follows an incident during the concluding prayer session of the Ijtema on Sunday, when a drone camera lost control and crashed near Gate No. 4 of the venue. The sudden fall of the drone caused panic among the worshippers, leading to a chaotic situation where several individuals sustained injuries. In response to this incident, the Gazipur Metropolitan Police issued the public notice later that afternoon, emphasizing the need for strict drone operation regulations to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
