Shakib Al Hasan, the renowned Bangladesh all-rounder, has been banned from bowling in competitions governed by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB). The ban follows an official ruling that his bowling action was illegal, after it was reported during a match in the County Championship in September.

Shakib's bowling action was flagged as suspicious by umpires during a match in which he played for Surrey. The umpires' concerns led to an independent assessment at Loughborough University, where Shakib's action was confirmed to be illegal. The ECB imposed the ban based on the results of the test conducted at the university.

To lift the ban, Shakib must undergo another independent assessment, where it is required that his elbow bend does not exceed 15 degrees. The ban officially took effect on December 10, the same day the ECB received the results from the Loughborough test.

In September, while playing for Surrey against Somerset at Tonbridge, Shakib took nine wickets, marking his first county match since the 2010-11 season. However, his career has recently been mired in controversy. Shakib has faced criticism for his role during the student protests in Bangladesh, particularly over the tragic events in which hundreds of protesters were killed in July-August. Amid this turmoil, Shakib announced his retirement from T20 internationals and did not appear for his farewell Test match in October in Mirpur.

Currently, Shakib is residing in the United States with his family and has distanced himself from international cricket. The ban on his bowling action further complicates his already tumultuous cricket career.
