Economic Adviser Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed has emphasized that economic reforms are the most urgent requirement for the country at this moment. He made these remarks during an event marking International Customs Day on Sunday, January 26, at the National Board of Revenue (NBR) headquarters in Agargaon, Dhaka.
While acknowledging the importance of political, economic, and electoral reforms, Dr. Ahmed stated that the country needs to prioritize economic reforms above all else. He stressed that although all types of reforms are significant, economic reform is essential at this time to ensure sustainable progress.
Recognizing the challenges in implementing economic reforms, the adviser acknowledged that the process is complex due to numerous procedural laws and regulations. However, he emphasized the need for proper and transparent application of these regulations to make progress.
Dr. Ahmed also pointed to inefficiencies in the administration, noting that while there are updated systems in place, they are not being utilized effectively. He urged officials to improve their professionalism in revenue collection and called on the customs department to assist in this effort without resorting to coercive measures or making illegal and unreasonable demands.
The Economic Adviser expressed the hope that the business community would be supportive and cooperative in the revenue collection process. He reassured them that the government was committed to improving the business environment and reducing obstacles, but emphasized that businesses must also fulfill their responsibilities in contributing to the national economy.
Dr. Ahmed acknowledged that businesses often seek a better environment in exchange for paying VAT and taxes. However, he pointed out that there are instances when deficiencies arise in this regard, and urged both the government and business sectors to work together to ensure fairness and transparency in the system.
While highlighting that businesses worldwide demand efficient tax systems, he emphasized the importance of ensuring that taxes collected contribute to the overall development of society, including sectors like education, health, and infrastructure.
Dr. Ahmed noted that Bangladesh has made significant progress in revenue collection and expenditure management. However, he admitted that the country still lags behind in terms of process and technology, which is becoming increasingly apparent. He urged that the nation must adapt to modern systems and embrace digital advancements to remain competitive in the global economy.
The Economic Adviser concluded by stressing that time is running out for the country to implement the necessary reforms and technological upgrades, and that urgent action is required to keep pace with the demands of the modern world.
