Home Affairs Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd.) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury stated that efforts are ongoing to arrest criminals who have fled the country and are currently abroad.
He made these remarks during a press briefing after visiting the headquarters of the Naval Police in Gulshan, Dhaka, on Wednesday afternoon.
The Adviser emphasized that the International Criminal Tribunal has issued arrest warrants against several individuals, many of whom have already been apprehended. He further explained that while certain individuals remain outside the country, it is difficult for local law enforcement to arrest them directly. However, efforts are being made through international cooperation and agreements with neighboring countries to bring them back to Bangladesh.
When questioned about road blockages and whether they were intended to destabilize the government, the Adviser remarked that such actions are often carried out without valid reasons. He encouraged the media to raise awareness so that the public could stand against such disruptions. He stressed the importance of avoiding actions that cause undue hardship to ordinary people and suggested that grievances should be directed to higher authorities or addressed in other ways, such as through peaceful protests in open spaces like school grounds.
In response to a question about the government's satisfaction with law enforcement in the past six months, he stated that the public is in the best position to judge. He highlighted the progress made since assuming office and assured that efforts are being made to meet the expectations of the people.
Regarding his visit to the Naval Police headquarters, the Adviser discussed the challenges faced by the force in terms of resources, particularly in terms of manpower and equipment. He assured that measures would be taken to address these challenges and enhance the effectiveness of their operations, particularly in curbing illegal fishing and the use of harmful fishing nets.
The Adviser also spoke about the ongoing efforts to combat extortion in the waterways, and how these issues were discussed during the meeting.
