For the past decade, the Amar Ekushey Book Fair has taken place at both the Bangla Academy grounds and Suhrawardy Udyan. However, the upcoming book fair in 2025 will not be held at Suhrawardy Udyan, as the Ministry of Housing and Public Works has not allocated the venue for the event.
In a letter sent to the Bangla Academy on November 6, the Ministry directed that the book fair should be organized solely within the Bangla Academy premises instead of Suhrawardy Udyan.
Despite this decision, Bangla Academy’s Director General, Mohammad Ajam, expressed intentions to appeal. He told the media, "The Ministry of Housing and Public Works has decided that the fair should not be held at Suhrawardy Udyan and should be limited to the Bangla Academy grounds. However, we will submit an appeal, as we hope to hold the book fair at Suhrawardy Udyan."
The Ekushey Book Fair’s origins trace back to 1972 when Chittaranjan Saha, founder of the Muktadhara publishing house, began selling books on a mat spread out at the Bangla Academy premises in February, the month commemorating the language movement. In 1984, the Bangla Academy formalized the event under guidelines, naming it the Ekushey Book Fair, which has been officially known as the Amar Ekushey Book Fair since 2021.
