Badiul Alam Majumdar, the head of the Election Reform Commission, has shared several recommendations aimed at improving the country’s electoral system, including proposals for direct presidential elections, transparency in political funding, and preventing uncontested elections. He revealed these suggestions during a press conference on Saturday (November 23) at the Election Commission office in Agargaon, Dhaka.

Among the key proposals discussed by the commission, one significant suggestion is holding direct elections for the president, as opposed to the current indirect system. Majumdar explained that some members of the commission also advocated for all elections to be direct, ensuring greater transparency and participation. Additionally, there were discussions on ensuring that local government elections be non-partisan, preventing the current parliamentary system from dictating local governance.

The commission also emphasized the importance of making sure no candidate is elected without competition. The idea of reintroducing the "None of the Above" (NOTA) option, allowing voters to reject all candidates, was also proposed, ensuring that elections remain genuinely competitive and that voter dissatisfaction is addressed. Majumdar stressed that preventing uncontested elections is vital for upholding the integrity of the electoral process.

Another important area of discussion was the transparency of election funding. Majumdar noted that ensuring clear disclosure of sources of funds for election campaigns is crucial to maintaining fairness and accountability in the system. Additionally, the use of technology to enhance the electoral process was highlighted, particularly with regard to the participation of overseas Bangladeshis in the voting system.

The commission also addressed the issue of political consensus for appointing the Election Commission, recognizing it as a crucial step for ensuring the credibility and independence of the body responsible for overseeing elections.

These proposals reflect the commission’s broader goal to address electoral irregularities and enhance voter confidence, especially as the country prepares for future elections.
