Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman stated that the entire nation, along with Jamaat-e-Islami—the most persecuted political party in the country—was liberated through the July-August movement last year.
He made these remarks on Wednesday at the National Press Club during the unveiling ceremony of the "July 2024 Revolution Martyrs' Memorial," organized by Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami.
Shafiqur Rahman expressed that the current generation deserves gratitude for their role in this liberation. He mentioned that Jamaat representatives visited the families of the martyrs to honor them and seek their blessings. He described these families as fortunate because their loved ones sacrificed their lives for the country.
He further stated that fascist rulers of the past have been mentioned in religious scriptures, and they all ultimately faced the same fate. He lamented that fascists read history but fail to learn from it.
He explained that history holds different meanings for different people—some find it joyful, some sorrowful, while others view it with pride. Those who have sacrificed their lives for the country, be it in 1947, during the Language Movement in 1952, the Liberation War in 1971, or most recently in July 2024, have contributed to a history of honor.
Shafiqur Rahman remarked that Jamaat-e-Islami also made sacrifices during the July 2024 movement. Just as the entire nation found liberation through the movement, the most persecuted political party was also freed in the process. Therefore, he reiterated that gratitude must be extended to the new generation.
He emphasized the importance of paying respects to the families of martyrs and seeking their blessings. According to him, these families are fortunate because their loved ones gave their lives for the nation.
The Jamaat chief also pointed out that the media was not spared from the grip of fascism. Many journalists lost their lives, endured custodial torture under the guise of remand, and faced persecution for expressing their views. He mentioned that those who waged battles with their words from abroad saw their families harassed, imprisoned, and even female members of their families were not spared.
In conclusion, he extended his respects and gratitude to all those who sacrificed their lives to establish the current environment of freedom.
