A fire broke out at a button manufacturing factory in Sreepur, Gazipur, resulting in the death of one individual. The blaze at M & U Trims Limited in the Bhagnahati village of Sreepur Municipality Ward No. 4 was brought under control after nearly two and a half hours of effort by seven fire service units on Sunday afternoon (December 22).

According to local sources, the fire started suddenly in the factory's chemical storage area around 1:30 PM. Shortly after the fire ignited, multiple explosions were heard, causing panic among the workers. As chaos unfolded, factory employees fled in fear, while residents of nearby homes began moving their belongings to safer locations. The repeated explosions caused vibrations across the surrounding area, further heightening the tension.

Mohammad Mamun, Deputy Assistant Director of the Gazipur Fire Service, stated that the Sreepur Fire Station was informed of the fire at 1:40 PM, and the first two fire-fighting units began working to control the flames by 1:56 PM. Given the presence of chemical drums and reports of explosions, additional support was called in. Three units from Gazipur Chourasta Modern Fire Station and two units from Rajendrapur Modern Fire Station joined the operation, bringing the total to seven units.

The fire service teams battled the blaze for two and a half hours before managing to bring it under control. However, due to the intensity of the fire and the presence of chemical drums, which expanded and exploded under the heat, the situation was highly volatile.

“We received reports of 2-3 injuries before our arrival,” Mamun said. “Unfortunately, we recovered one body at the site. It appears to be a male, but the identity of the deceased has not yet been confirmed. The fire is now under control, but the process of cooling and dumping the remaining materials is ongoing, which will take additional time.”

The factory's chemical storage, where the fire originated, was found to contain a large number of chemical drums, which intensified the fire and caused continuous explosions.

The incident has raised concerns among the local residents, who were visibly shaken by the explosions and the risk to their safety. Authorities are investigating the cause of the fire and assessing the extent of the damage.
