Former Chairman of the Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC), Shibli Rubaiyat-ul-Islam, has been arrested by the police in Dhaka. The arrest took place on Tuesday night (February 4) in the capital's Dhanmondi area following a raid conducted by law enforcement authorities.
The Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) confirmed the arrest. Additional Police Commissioner Rezaul Karim Mallik stated that Shibli Rubaiyat was taken into custody in connection with a case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
During his tenure as the BSEC chairman, allegations surfaced against him regarding his involvement in irregularities within the stock market. He was accused of facilitating financial misconduct that led to significant market manipulation and the illicit acquisition of wealth. Due to these allegations, the Ministry of Home Affairs recently revoked his passport to prevent any potential attempt to flee the country.
Shibli Rubaiyat stepped down from his position as BSEC chairman on August 10 of last year. His resignation came amidst growing scrutiny over regulatory failures and concerns regarding corruption within the capital markets.
Authorities have indicated that further investigations will determine the extent of his involvement in the alleged financial irregularities. Meanwhile, the ACC is expected to proceed with legal actions based on the findings of their inquiry.
Law enforcement agencies continue to monitor developments in this case as it unfolds, with more details likely to emerge in the coming days.
