Abdus Salam Murshedy, a former Member of Parliament from Khulna-4 constituency (Rupsha-Digholia-Terokhada) and Awami League leader, was denied bail by the Khulna Senior Judicial Magistrate Court-3 on Monday. Following the court’s decision, Murshedy was sent to jail under strict police security.
Court sources confirmed that Murshedy was brought to the courthouse under heavy police escort due to heightened tensions surrounding his case. While being escorted, an angry crowd gathered outside the court premises, hurling eggs at him and chanting slogans such as “Vote thief, vote thief.” The chaotic scene underscored the public's outrage and distrust toward the former lawmaker.
During the hearing, Murshedy’s defense team, led by Barrister Tahsin Ahmed, argued for bail in a case filed at the Digholia Police Station. The case pertains to an alleged attack on BNP activists near the ferry terminal in Digholia on August 25, 2022. On August 27, a case was registered against Salam Murshedy and 67 others in connection with the incident. However, the presiding magistrate denied the bail plea and set the next hearing date for February 9, directing that Murshedy remain in custody until then.
The legal troubles for Abdus Salam Murshedy extend beyond this single case. Reports indicate that he is currently facing four criminal cases in Khulna, including allegations of violence and electoral misconduct. His court appearance on Monday was specifically tied to the Digholia case, where his alleged involvement in the assault on opposition activists has drawn significant criticism.
As Murshedy was escorted back to jail, the public's protest intensified outside the courthouse, with demonstrators accusing him of corruption and malpractice. Despite the police’s efforts to maintain order, the palpable anger among the crowd reflected widespread dissatisfaction with his actions during his tenure.
Salam Murshedy, once a prominent figure in local politics and known for his business acumen, now finds himself at the center of legal battles and public disapproval. His detention and the rejection of his bail plea mark a significant turn in his political career, raising questions about accountability and justice in the region.
The court has scheduled the next hearing in February, leaving Murshedy to remain in custody as investigations continue. This development highlights the growing tension surrounding allegations of political violence and electoral misconduct in Khulna, with public scrutiny intensifying on those implicated.
