Former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Abdullah Al Mamun was the supreme commander of the genocide carried out in July and August, according to Chief Prosecutor Tazul Islam of the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT). The statement was made on Wednesday (November 20) during a hearing on charges of genocide against the former police chief and seven other officials.

The tribunal, chaired by Justice Md. Golam Mortuza Majumder and comprising three members, began proceedings at 11:30 AM. The accused were brought to the tribunal earlier in the day under tight security in a prison van.

The eight accused include former IGP Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun, former Director General of the National Telecommunication Monitoring Center (NTMC) Major General (Retd.) Ziaul Ahsan, former Dhaka District Superintendent of Police Md. Abdullah Al Kafi, former Deputy Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police Md. Jasim Uddin Molla, former Additional Superintendent of Police (Savar Circle) Md. Shahidur Islam, former Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Jatrabari Police Station Abul Hasan, former OC of Gulshan Police Station Mazharul Haque, and former Inspector of Dhaka North Detective Branch (DB) Md. Arafat Hossain.

The hearing focused on charges of crimes against humanity linked to the genocide in July and August. These officials were arrested following the tribunal's order issued on October 27, granting the prosecution’s plea to bring them to justice.

Arrest warrants were also issued against 17 former police officials in connection with crimes against humanity. Those already in custody have been brought to the tribunal, with further hearings underway.
