Saidur Rahman Sujan, a former chairman of the Birulia Union Parishad and a leader of the ruling Awami League, has been arrested by the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police on charges of indiscriminate shooting during the July-August uprisings in Savar. The incident involved violence against protesting students and citizens advocating for equality and justice.

Sujan was apprehended on Monday morning (January 20) during a raid conducted at an apartment in Uttara, Dhaka, based on a tip-off. The arrest was confirmed by Jewel Mia, the officer-in-charge (OC) of Savar Model Police Station. According to police sources, Sujan had been seen brandishing weapons and firing shots alongside other Awami League leaders during the protests.

Sujan has a history of criminal allegations, including land grabbing and attempts to assert dominance in the local area. Jewel Mia stated that Sujan is named in over a dozen murder cases filed with the Savar Model Police Station.

Previously, Sujan was arrested on September 30, 2020, from the Kakabo area of Birulia Union on extortion charges. His involvement in multiple criminal activities has drawn criticism from various quarters, tarnishing his political career.

The arrest comes after widespread condemnation of his actions during the uprisings, where the use of firearms against unarmed students and citizens fueled public outrage. Investigations into his alleged crimes are ongoing, and authorities are expected to press charges against him soon.
