In a gathering organized by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Information and Broadcasting Advisor Md. Mahfuz Alam emphasized the government's expectation for the media to play a neutral and responsible role. Speaking at an Iftar mahfil and discussion event held at the Information Building in the capital on Thursday, he addressed the growing prevalence of rumors and misinformation, urging the media to take an active role in countering these challenges.
Advisor Alam welcomed constructive criticism from the media, stating that it aids the government in making informed decisions. However, he also stressed the importance of highlighting the government's positive initiatives alongside critical reporting. "The media should not only focus on criticism but also promote the government's developmental efforts," he added.
Reflecting on the media's role over the past 16 years, Alam acknowledged the need for reform in the sector. He revealed that the government has established a Media Reform Commission to bring discipline to the industry. The commission's recommendations will guide the government's efforts to reform the media landscape. Alam called for cooperation from media owners, journalists, and all stakeholders in this reform process.
The event was attended by Information and Broadcasting Secretary Mahbuba Farzana, owners and editors of print and electronic media, and officials from the Press Wing of the Prime Minister's Office. The gathering underscored the government's commitment to fostering a balanced and responsible media environment.
