The government has announced plans to import rice from Vietnam to stabilize domestic supply and market prices. A bilateral meeting under the Government-to-Government (G2G) framework will take place on Wednesday, January 22, to discuss and finalize the procurement process. This information was disclosed in a letter issued by the Foreign Procurement Branch of the Ministry of Food.
On Tuesday morning, during an inspection of the unloading activities for imported rice at Chattogram Port, Ali Imam Majumder, Food and Land Advisor of the interim government, addressed the media. He shared that the government aims to import a total of 900,000 metric tons of rice this year from India, Pakistan, Myanmar, and Vietnam.
Ali Imam Majumder confirmed that approximately 50,000 tons of rice have already arrived from Myanmar and India, while another 50,000 tons are expected from Pakistan shortly. He emphasized that the imports have already led to a reduction in the market price of coarse rice by 5 Bangladeshi taka per kilogram.
Additionally, the government is preparing a food assistance program targeting 5 million people nationwide during the upcoming Ramadan. This initiative aims to provide affordable food to low-income households during the holy month.
The advisor noted that these steps are part of the government's broader strategy to ensure food security and stabilize market dynamics amid rising demand.
