Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan, Advisor to the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development, and Cooperatives, has announced that civil servants who have been acting in ways akin to political leaders will be investigated and held accountable. Speaking at a meeting with officials of the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) on Sunday, December 8, 2024, Bhuiyan emphasized that action would be taken against those who have engaged in political favoritism and corruption while working in government institutions under the Ministry of Local Government.

Bhuiyan remarked that some civil servants have taken actions based on political considerations, leading to misconduct within various organizations under the ministry. As part of the effort to address these issues, the ministry is initiating steps to investigate these practices and impose necessary measures.

Addressing the issue of corruption, Bhuiyan also highlighted the importance of holding public officials accountable. He referenced the recent media reports about corruption allegations involving government officers and stated that these would be thoroughly examined. If the allegations are found to be true, appropriate measures will be taken against those responsible. The advisor stressed that in the past, project funds were often misappropriated through corruption, but efforts would now be made to prevent such misuse of public funds.

Bhuiyan also expressed concern over the lack of local representatives in some areas, which has led to a decline in effective anti-dengue measures. He promised swift action to address this issue and ensure proper measures are in place to combat the dengue outbreak in those regions.

Additionally, the advisor pointed out that many public spaces such as roads, footpaths, parks, canals, rivers, and playgrounds are illegally occupied. As part of the ongoing efforts, steps have already been taken to reclaim these areas. He assured that actions would be swiftly taken against extortionists and encroachers, particularly in areas under the jurisdiction of the Dhaka South City Corporation. Furthermore, Bhuiyan mentioned that the government is considering rehabilitation programs for street vendors who have set up shops on footpaths, aiming to provide them with alternative means of livelihood.

The meeting, held at the DSCC's Nagar Bhaban auditorium, was chaired by the Administrator of Dhaka South City Corporation, Nazrul Islam. Chief Executive Officer of DSCC, Mizanur Rahman, and other officials from various departments of the corporation were also present at the event.

Before the meeting, Advisor Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan also inaugurated a photo gallery showcasing the July 2024 People's Uprising at the Nagar Bhaban.
