The Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education (DSHE) has officially withdrawn its directive to take action against students found spreading propaganda or misinformation against the government or state. The decision was announced in a letter issued by the DSHE on Wednesday, January 22.
Previously, on January 2, a circular signed by Professor Abed Noman stated that any educational institution or student involved in activities promoting misinformation or propaganda against the government or the state would face disciplinary measures. This announcement stirred significant backlash on social media and other public platforms, leading to extensive criticism of the decision.
In response to the growing dissent, the DSHE issued a notification today, confirming the withdrawal of the earlier directive. The notification emphasized that the cancellation aimed to address concerns raised by stakeholders and ensure an open and conducive environment for education. The move was welcomed by many, who viewed it as a step towards safeguarding students' freedom of expression and preventing undue restrictions on academic institutions.
While the initial directive had sparked heated debate, its withdrawal reflects the DSHE’s acknowledgment of public sentiment and a commitment to fostering a more balanced approach to addressing sensitive issues within the education sector.
