Babul Kazi, the grandson of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam, passed away on Sunday evening at 5:30 PM while receiving treatment at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery. The news of his death was confirmed to the media by the institute’s residential surgeon, Dr. Shawon Bin Rahman.

Dr. Rahman stated that 74 percent of Babul Kazi’s body was severely burned, and his respiratory tract was also damaged due to the injuries. On Saturday night, he was placed on life support, and a 19-member medical board was formed for his treatment. Despite their efforts, Babul Kazi breathed his last on Sunday evening.

The incident occurred on Saturday, January 18, around 5:30 AM at his residence located on Road 109, Block A in Banani. Family members rushed him to the burn institute after the accident.

Babul Kazi’s elder sister, Khilkhil Kazi, informed reporters that he lived with his wife Nadira Farzana Runa, two sons, and a daughter in their Banani home. Babul Kazi was involved in the garment business and had a habit of smoking.

According to Khilkhil Kazi, early Saturday morning, Babul Kazi went to the bathroom to light a cigarette using a gas lighter. This action led to an explosion, presumably caused by the presence of methane gas in the bathroom. He managed to open the bathroom door and step out, at which point his wife and children helped him out of the house and took him directly to the hospital.

Dr. Md. Maruful Islam, acting director of the burn institute, said that Babul Kazi was brought to the hospital in critical condition. His body had suffered 74 percent burns, and his respiratory system was significantly damaged. Despite intensive care, his condition remained extremely grave, ultimately leading to his passing.
