A petition has been filed in the High Court seeking a ban on setting off fireworks, bursting crackers, and releasing sky lanterns from residential rooftops during New Year’s Eve celebrations. The petition was submitted on Monday by Supreme Court lawyer Ashrafuzzaman, naming the Home Ministry Secretary, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), and the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner as respondents.
Ashrafuzzaman stated that the petition seeks directives to prohibit loud festivities, particularly between 11 PM and 1 AM on New Year’s Eve. Additionally, it requests that the sale of fireworks, crackers, and lanterns be stopped, along with a ban on public gatherings in streets, parks, and open spaces after 10 PM on December 31.
The lawyer emphasized the need for mobile court operations to enforce the requested restrictions effectively. The petition argues that such measures are necessary to curb noise pollution, maintain public safety, and ensure an orderly celebration of the occasion. The High Court's directives on the matter are awaited.
