A devastating fire that broke out in Building No. 7 of the Bangladesh Secretariat in Segunbagicha has been brought under control after nearly six hours of relentless efforts by the fire service. During his visit to the scene, Interim Government’s Interior Adviser, Lieutenant General (Retired) Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, announced the formation of a high-level investigation committee to probe the incident. The committee may consist of five to eleven members, as determined based on the scope of the investigation.
The Interior Adviser stated that the fire started on the 6th floor of the building at approximately 1:50 AM. The fire service was alerted at 1:52 AM and began their operation two minutes later at 1:54 AM. By 8:05 AM, the fire was fully brought under control. Tragically, one firefighter, Sohanuzzaman Noyon, lost his life in the line of duty. While carrying a water pipe toward the affected area, he was struck by a truck, sustaining critical injuries. Despite being rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, he succumbed to his injuries. Additionally, two to three other individuals sustained minor injuries but are reported to be in stable condition.
The Interior Adviser assured that the investigation would thoroughly examine all aspects of the incident, including its origin and the extent of the damage. He directed the Cabinet Secretary to establish the committee promptly. While responding to questions about whether the fire could be linked to sabotage, the Adviser stated that no conclusions could be drawn until the investigation is complete.
Further observations and details will be shared once the committee begins its work and preliminary findings are available.
