India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri has reiterated that India does not support political activities conducted by Sheikh Hasina from Indian soil against the interim government of Bangladesh. Speaking before the Parliamentary Standing Committee on External Affairs, chaired by opposition MP Shashi Tharoor, Misri emphasized that India’s relationship with Bangladesh transcends individual political entities or governments and focuses on the people of Bangladesh.

During his briefing, Misri discussed his recent visit to Dhaka, where topics such as Sheikh Hasina's political statements, allegations of minority persecution in Bangladesh, and broader bilateral issues were raised. He clarified that the Indian government had not provided any platform or opportunity for Sheikh Hasina to conduct political activities from India, adhering to its traditional policy of non-interference in the internal affairs of other nations.

The briefing came amidst controversies surrounding recent video messages by Sheikh Hasina criticizing the interim government in Bangladesh, which have drawn the ire of Bangladeshi authorities. Misri described her use of personal communication tools to disseminate messages but stressed that this was not facilitated by the Indian government.

India views its relations with Bangladesh through a broader lens of regional cooperation, as highlighted by Misri’s remarks. He noted that the partnership encompasses rail, bus, and inland waterway projects that bolster connectivity. However, he acknowledged the current suspension of passenger rail services between the two nations.

Addressing concerns over violence against minority communities in Bangladesh, Misri expressed India's concern while acknowledging the steps taken by Bangladeshi authorities to apprehend those involved. He also highlighted India’s concerns about the release of individuals convicted of anti-India activities by Bangladeshi authorities.

Misri outlined the significant interactions during his Dhaka visit, including meetings with Interim Prime Minister Dr. Muhammad Yunus, Foreign Adviser Md. Touhid Hossain, and Foreign Secretary Jasim Uddin. He emphasized that despite ongoing tensions, the discussions marked a positive step in improving bilateral relations.

India’s diplomatic approach, as articulated by Misri, focuses on fostering long-term cooperation with the people of Bangladesh, regardless of the government in power. He also dismissed rumors about the interim government reconsidering agreements with India, stating there were no indications of such actions.

The briefing further addressed sensitive issues, such as the recent public protests in Bangladesh, the political fallout of Sheikh Hasina’s removal in August, and the detention of ISKCON leader Chinmoy Krishna Das. Misri described these events as challenging moments but reaffirmed India’s commitment to sustaining diplomatic ties with Bangladesh.

India’s stance underscores the importance of maintaining a stable and cooperative relationship with its neighbor. Misri’s visit and subsequent discussions in Dhaka and Delhi reflect an ongoing effort to address mutual concerns while respecting the sovereignty and internal matters of Bangladesh.
