Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri expressed India’s desire for a positive and constructive relationship with Bangladesh during his visit to Dhaka. Speaking to reporters on Monday, December 9, after the foreign secretary-level talks between the two nations, Misri emphasized India’s commitment to fostering mutual cooperation and addressing shared challenges.

“We have had very open and constructive discussions,” Misri stated. “India is firmly committed to a positive, constructive, and mutually beneficial relationship with Bangladesh. This relationship will remain people-centric, focusing on the welfare of our citizens. Our cooperation has historically been supportive and will continue to serve the best interests of both nations.”

Misri reiterated India’s interest in collaborating closely with Bangladesh’s interim government and stressed that bilateral cooperation should not waver. He added that recent developments and issues were also addressed during the discussions. Misri shared concerns about the security and welfare of minorities and discussed incidents involving cultural, religious, and diplomatic assets.

The meeting was held at the Padma State Guest House in Dhaka and lasted approximately two hours. Foreign Secretary Md. Jasim Uddin led the Bangladesh delegation, while Misri headed the Indian side. Prior to the broader meeting, the two foreign secretaries held a private discussion.

Misri’s visit marks his first official trip to Bangladesh as India’s foreign secretary. He arrived in Dhaka earlier in the day on a special flight, with his motorcade entering the guest house at around 11 a.m. The high-level meeting comes amidst challenges in bilateral ties following a political transition in Bangladesh under Sheikh Hasina’s leadership.

During the talks, the two sides focused on bridging political distances. According to sources from Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Dhaka delegation raised concerns regarding India’s role in curbing anti-Bangladesh propaganda in its media, resolving visa-related issues, and addressing activities linked to Sheikh Hasina’s political endeavors from Indian soil.

Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to working towards solutions that benefit their citizens and strengthen bilateral ties, emphasizing shared goals and mutual respect.
